The Polo Club Düsseldorf hosts the European Polo Championship 2023 for the first time.
Düsseldorf, July 28, 2023 - With top-class polo teams from 8 nations, the XIV FIP European Polo Championship is coming to the Rhine this year. From September 1 to 10, the Polo Club Düsseldorf will host the European Championship and welcome the national teams from eight countries.
The Federation of International Polo (FIP), based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, has awarded Polo Club Düsseldorf the contract to host the prestigious European Polo Championship this year. From September 1 to 10, 2023, eight teams with 32 players, over 200 horses and grooms will come to Düsseldorf to compete for the coveted title.
Defending champion and reigning European champion is Italy, which this year will have to compete against teams from England, Spain, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Azerbaijan and Germany. International polo names and promising young talents have announced their participation, so that this European Championship will provide a highly exciting insight into the European sport. Phenomenal: For Germany, the four Munich brothers Anton, Emil, Michl and Paul Grabosch and their father will be competing as a pure family team as the national team.
The Polo Club Düsseldorf, which is as rich in tradition as it is prestigious, is one of the long-established top clubs in Germany. Since 2018, it has been given a general overhaul by its new owner Otto Blank and has since shone in new splendor. Two full-size polo fields, another stick & ball field and an excellent infrastructure for equestrian sports are available here. The Polo Club Düsseldorf was already co-host of the first European Polo Championship in 1993 alongside St. Moritz.
Otto Blank: "The Polo Club Düsseldorf has always played a major role in the continued existence and development of polo in Germany. After more than 44 years and extensive renovations, we now offer polo a unique platform in the north of our beautiful state capital. Our primary goal was to make the "experience" of polo even more unique for our visitors through the extensive renovations - and we succeeded! We are very pleased to welcome our guests and the international teams to our beautiful facility and are honored to be named host of the XIV FIP European Polo Championship this year."
The first European Polo Championship was held in St. Moritz, Switzerland in 1993. With six victories, one 2nd place and one 3rd place, England has been the most successful nation in the European Polo Championship so far. In second place in the statistics is Italy with three title wins, followed by France with two victories. In Germany, a European Polo Championship has so far only taken place in 2008 at Gut Aspern near Hamburg and in 2016 at Berlin's Maifeld.
In addition to the world federation FIP, the German Polo Association (DPV) is also a co-host of the European Championship in Düsseldorf.
